As part of the SPACE Project aimed at improving public areas for youth, a survey was conducted to better understand how young people in Ulcinj use outdoor spaces in their communities. This initiative gathered insights to inform future enhancements and ensure these spaces are more youth-friendly and accessible.
The purpose of this survey was to understand how young people in Ulcinj use outdoor spaces in their town or village. Their responses will help guide improvements to make these areas more youth-friendly and accessible. The target group included youth from both rural and urban areas of Ulcinj. To ensure broad participation, the survey was translated into the two official languages of the municipality, Montenegrin and Albanian. It was distributed both online via Google Forms and in printed form, which participants filled out on the spot at the Ulcinj Library. A total of 30 participants between the ages of 15 and 20 took part in the survey.
After collection, printed responses were digitized, and all data was cleaned for accuracy. Quantitative answers were analyzed using basic statistical methods, while open-ended responses were categorized thematically. The results highlighted a strong interest among youth in having cleaner, safer, and better-equipped outdoor spaces, especially those that support sports, social interaction, and cultural activities. These findings will be used to inform local planning and improve public spaces based on youth input. The survey also revealed that many young people feel disconnected from the decision-making processes related to public spaces. Including youth voices in urban planning initiatives will not only address their needs but also encourage greater civic engagement and community ownership. Continued consultation with young people is essential to ensure that future improvements reflect their evolving preferences and daily realities.
